Home treatment

Home treatment is often a convenient method of treatment with many potential practical benefits for the patient:

  • Bleeds can be treated much more quickly
  • Fewer trips to the hospital
  • Reduction in pain in affected joints
  • Reduced use of painkillers
  • Less interruption of school / work
  • Can participate in sports with less worry
  • More independence

With home treatment however there are some important issues to consider:

  • Feelings of apprehension about learning to inject yourself or your child
  • It is possible that for a short time the child may resent the parent who gives the treatment
  • Home treatment is a big responsibility

It's important to remember that home treatment is only one aspect of haemophilia care as patients will still need to attend blood tests and clinic appointments at your Haemophilia Centre.
