Summary of Product Characteristics Prescribing Information Patient Information LeafletTreatment and care of people with bleeding disorders remains very specialised and is carried out in specialist haemophilia centres within NHS hospitals. There are 95 haemophilia treatment centres in the UK. There are two types of treatment centre – Comprehensive Care Centres and Haemophilia Centres:
- Comprehensive Care Centres offer care for the complex treatment issues that people with bleeding disorders may face. They have a complete range of treatment and diagnostic services, including genetic counselling and diagnosis. They are centres of excellence with a range of specialist staff. There are Comprehensive Care Centres in most areas – with 26 centres around the country – although people may have to travel some distance to reach their nearest one.
- Haemophilia Centres provide routine care, information and support for people with haemophilia and other common related bleeding disorders such as von Willebrand's. Generally speaking, these tend to be smaller centres, looking after fewer patients than Comprehensive Care Centres.
Because haemophilia is a lifelong condition, continued supervision by a specialist medical team is of
paramount importance. People with moderate/severe haemophilia or von Willebrand's must be registered with a Comprehensive Care Centre where they are regularly reviewed by the multi-disciplinary health team (a team made up of different healthcare professionals).
There are two ways to register with a Comprehensive Care Centre: anyone can contact their nearest centre and make their own appointment, or they can ask their GP to organise a referral.
