The United Kingdom Haemophilia Centre Doctors Organisation (UKHCDO) recommends that recombinant FVIII (rFVIII) concentrate be the treatment of choice for those with haemophilia A. In 1998, the United Kingdom Department of Health decided that all Health Authorities should make arrangements to ensure that recombinant FVIII be made available to new patients and to those children under the age of 16 who were not already receiving these products.

More recently, the decision was made to also include adults in the recommendation that recombinant FVIII is

the treatment of choice. As a result nearly all patients in the UK were switched to a rFVIII product.

KOGENATE^® Bayer is a recombinant factor VIII produced by a process called genetic engineering. This involves taking a copy of the human gene that makes factor VIII and growing it under special conditions in a laboratory. The factor VIII that is produced is collected and sterilised. It is then ready for use. Factor VIII that is made in this way is exactly the same as human factor VIII as it is derived from the human factor VIII gene.
